ABOUT A STEAM SHOWER INSTALLATION
SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND -
Today, with all of the stress that we face each day, being able to come home every day to a relaxing session of steam and bliss is a great source of stress relief. The trend toward budgeting is gaining traction, and more and more people are setting aside money for a steam shower installation.
WHAT STEAM UNIT SHOULD I PURCHASE? - It is essential to conduct thorough research in selecting your steam unit. Some people who have invested time, money, and effort into a bathroom renovation have made the mistake of purchasing a lower-end steam unit only to discover that the unit cannot be fixed until the unit is replaced. And finding the right people to service your unit is a subject in itself. Some Steam Generator Options to consider - THERMASOL - STEAMIST
WILL A WINDOW WORK IN A STEAM SHOWER? - Yes, it is possible. As long as your window is a double-pane window. Most newer homes do have double pane. No heat out and no cold in.
IS INSULATION OF THE STEAM SHOWER NECESSARY? - Yes, especially when the walls or ceiling is an exterior wall. Insulation ensures that the heat remains in the shower and doesn't escape outside and guards against a cold chill coming in.
WHAT ABOUT A SMALL SHOWER, CAN A BENCH BE BUILT? - A corner seat can be built in the shower, which can take up a lot less space. Or if you purchase a folding seat to save space.
Here's the project as we first saw it. The shower is to be enlarged by eliminating the towel shelf we gain another foot of space
We demo out the old shower and shelves to the studs and sub-floor. This is in a concrete slab. The next step in the process is plumbing, electrical and steam generator installation.
The extra space we gained removing the shelves allowed for a shower bench to be framed in. Housing the steam generator.
The shower is insulated and the wallboard is installed. with all of the seams and joints waterproofed with Mapei's liquid rubber membrane. Before the tile installation.
Porcelain tile is the perfect choice in a steam shower. We always tile the walls and ceiling before the shower floor which allows the cement poured shower pan to cure thoroughly.
We frame a custom bench around the steam generator. The copper pipe that extends out into the shower is the drain pipe. The steam will come out the opposite wall.
When it comes to shower pans the Schluter-Kerdi membrane is top notch in providing a watertight installation.
This porcelain tile is set in a vertical pattern with all of the grout line matching up. The pattern is followed up the bench wall along the ceiling to the opposite valve wall.
The original shower featured a fiber-glass shower pan. When we removed the old pan this is what was left. We have to break out the concrete for a new p-trap and shower drain.
We jack hammer out the concrete until we can expose the old cast iron drain pipe and p-trap. This has to be removed so that the new Schluter shower drain can be installed.
The cast iron pipe is cut and a no hub adapter is fitted for the new PVC p-trap. The new drain can now be installed and cement is poured.
The tile is installed directly to the waterproofing membrane. The sheet mounted tile is porcelain in a basket weave pattern. All the tile installed in this steam shower project was purchased at Floor & Decor.
Once all of the tile is installed the glass doors can be measured and ordered. Plumbing can be completed and steam generator can be fired up.
Can Natural stone tile like marble or granite be used in a steam shower?
We are asked that question frequently so we added another section below to address the question.
It also is good to make sure that if you do decide to use marble or some other type of stone tile that the shower ventilation is good and vented outside helping to reduce mold and mildew growth.
TILE INSTALLATION for STEAM ROOMS & STEAM SHOWERS
The tile for your steam room or steam shower can be any kind you choose for the tile installation there is, however, a variation in the heat efficiency of each of these tiles with regards to the steam generator to be installed for your bathroom shower installation project.
Quality porcelain tile and the best ceramic and glass tile are the most efficient tiles that are non-porous and retain the heat with the best results. Similarly, you can install natural stone as well, but natural stone requires additional maintenance with its sealing every year or two depending on how often the steam unit is used. In addition, for a large steam room or steam shower, it may be wiser to choose non-porous porcelain tiles as mentioned above.
The steam shower featured is a 13x24 porcelain wall tile that is set horizontally with the grout lines matching in straight lines. Installed over the surface of the steam shower are the natural stone tiles which are mostly used on the ceiling and shower pan installation. Because the shower is smaller than most, the minimal use of natural stone tiles does not affect the efficiency of the steam generator. A larger unit could be adversely affected.
Whatever choice you make for your steam room or steam shower installation update Action Shower Pan & Steam Shower Company will install your tile with careful attention to all surfaces and details. Our 40 years of tile installation and bathroom remodeling experience is applied to all of the projects that we contract with for a safe, secure and beautiful steam room & shower installation.
