Beautiful marble tile installation. Horrible shower pan installation. The original shower floor tile installation matched the quality the was installed in the rest of the shower and bathroom remodel. the problem was an improperly installed shower pan.
This shower pan repair depended on matching the existing wall and floor tile. The good thing the homeowner had going was the fact that her tile is a natural stone tile. The marble tile was quickly located and our tile installer was able to finish her shower pan repair in a timely manner.
The homeowner was able to find this hexagon sheet mounted marble tile to finish the shower pan repair. The waterproofing membrane that was installed is by Schluter-Kerdi and was applied to the fully cured cement poured shower pan we poured.
This 2 wall shower included a feature wall with sheet mounted glass tile and a shower bench topped with a piece of granite slab. the shower pan was leaking and needed to be replaced. We begin by removing the existing shower pan and 12" of the bottom roll of tile to the studs and subfloor then we install DenShiled to the walls and curb and we install durrock cement board to the subfloor. We will cement on top of this by making a sluury with thinset and cementing on top of that.
Once the cement is given enough time to cure a minimum of at least 72 hours, we are able to apply the waterproofing membrane. We will also let this cure before we add water to the pan to test that the new pan will hold the water and to make sure that the shower pan will drain properly.
The homeowner was able to find the glass tile online. He had a few pieces of wall tile for the front of the shower bench and found some tile that closely matched the bathroom floor to install on the shower curb and also purchased 2x2 sheet mounted tile to compliment the tile that was installed on the shower curb.
Once we remove a shower pan that is leaking we will make whatever repairs that are needed and we install a new shower curb. We will install new Denshield to the walls and curb and allow the cement to cure a minimum 72 hours before we install the waterproofing membrane.
Once the cement has cured we will install the Schluter-kerdi drain and waterproofing membrane as can be seen as orange. The tile is installed directly to the membrane material which revoluntionized the tile trade when this product hit the market some years ago.
Tile shower pan repair in a newly installed shower with ceramic tile on the walls. The new tile on the shower pan is a hexagon porcelain tile made to look like a natural stone tile. Since thiw was a relatively new shower installation the replacement tile was easy to get. The tun of the shower curb was a piece of white marble that was purchased at Floor & Decor.

This repair turned into a shower pan replacement for a brand ne shower installation. There was still a warranty on the shower installation but the homeowner did not want the original install to come back and fix his installation. He did pour cement but installed the shower pan incorrectly.
Once the old shower pan is removed to the studs and subfloor we replace the shower drain and install a new shcluter-kerdi shower drain that is designed to effectively bond to the waterproofing membrane we are installing. The membrane is available near and far nowadays as it's popularity continues to trend upward.
We always water test the new Schluter-Kerdi shower pan to make sure the pan is holding water and is draining correctly. The tile installer can then begin with the tile installation. When the work is completed we will install the shower doors.
When I removed the old tile and cement work I found out that there was a fix before. It looked like the repair was made trying to be non-invasive. They opened up the kitchen ceiling below to get to the pan from underneath. It was a good try that didn't work. the shower pan leak reappeared just weeks after the first pan repair was attempted.
Unfortunately by the time I am on the job the shower pan cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced. This Denver shower pan is thoroughly waterproofed with Schluter-Kerdi waterproofing membrane. The homeowners could not find the original 12x12 marble tile anywhere online. However, they did a great job of locating a 2x2 sheet mounted tile that would work. This master bathroom was tiled every where in this hard to find marble and the homeowners came up with a really good solution. We were also able to salvage some of the tile we removed to tile the shower curb to lock in the design. Big savings, and looks great!
This shower pan had been repaired twice before I was hired to take on this project. In these cases it's best just to get down to the studs and start all over from scratch to see exactly how and where the water leak was taking place. In both the original shower pan installation and the repair that followed, the cause was installer error.
We changed the shower drain and installed a new Schluter drain and installed cement board to the floor and walls. Cement was then poured with dry pack and allowed to cure for at least 72 hours. The membrane is installed and the pan is tested making sure that the new pan is containing the water and that there are no leaks. In this picture the pan is filled with water.
The steam shower wall tile is a white ceramic tile and there was no problem matching what was there. The shower pan tile is a natural stone travertine basket weave pattern tile that finished the project off.
This shower pan had been leaking downstairs and had been unused for some time. With these types of pans the weak area is in most cases around the drain, shower pan curb and cuts or nails through the pan when installing the wallboard over the sheet membrane.
Schluter-Kerdi is always is the best choice for a water tight no leak shower pan installation. The pan is filled with water and inspected for leaks, making sure the pan contains the water and it drains properly.
Locating the tile for this project wasn't a problem. The homeowner was able to find it on-line. This is the case with most stone tiles. They are quarried world wide and most of these stone tile can be located online. The shower repair is complete the tile matched 100% You would never know that the shower pan was replaced.
